What chlorine and lime do to your skin

Wat chloor en kalk met je huid doen

Dutch tap water contains chlorine and lime. Not dangerous, but enough to damage your skin barrier and dry out your hair. Here's what you can do about it.

You invest in good skincare. A serum with niacinamide, a hydrating cream, maybe a mask once a week. You know what you're putting on your skin.

But do you also know what rinses off?

What's in your tap water

Dutch and Belgian tap water is safe. That's not up for debate. Drinking water companies supply water that meets strict standards — and that's precisely where the story gets interesting.

To keep that water safe until it comes out of your tap, chlorine is added to it. Chlorine kills bacteria in the pipes. Effective, cheap, proven. But by the time the water touches your skin, that chlorine no longer has a useful function. It's a residue.

In addition, tap water in many regions contains calcium and magnesium ions — better known as lime. The hardness varies by municipality. In large parts of Flanders, Brussels, and parts of East Netherlands, the water is hard to very hard. In the Randstad and the north of the Netherlands, it is softer, but never completely free of these minerals.

What chlorine does to your skin

Chlorine is an oxidizing agent. That's precisely why it kills bacteria — it breaks down organic material. The problem: your skin is also organic material.

With daily contact — and most people shower daily — chlorine can affect your skin's natural sebum layer. This sebum layer is your first line of defense: it retains moisture and protects against irritation. Without that layer, your skin loses moisture more quickly. The result is recognizable: a dry, tight feeling after showering. Skin that gets irritated more easily. For people with sensitive skin or existing conditions such as eczema or atopic dermatitis, the symptoms can worsen.

In short: chlorine disrupts the barrier that you then try to restore with your skincare.

What lime does

Lime works differently than chlorine, but the effect accumulates. Calcium and magnesium ions leave an invisible film on your skin and hair. This film disrupts the pH balance of your skin and makes it harder for products to actually absorb.

On your hair, the effect is more visible. Lime makes hair porous, dry, and dull. It breaks more easily. Dyed hair discolors faster. Your scalp can become flaky — not due to dandruff, but due to mineral deposits.

Why your skincare routine doesn't help against this

Most care products are designed to add nutrients to your skin. They do that well. But they are not designed to first neutralize chlorine or remove lime residue. So you apply them to skin that has already been affected by the water you just showered with.

It's like painting a wall that's still wet from the rain. The paint adheres less well. Not because the paint is bad, but because the surface is not right.

The base — the water — is the step most people skip.

What you can do about it

There are a few options.

Shorter showers help. Less contact time with chlorine and lime means less impact. But it's a limitation, not a solution.

Cooler showers also help. Warm water opens your pores and makes your skin more vulnerable to chemicals. But again: it limits the damage, it doesn't prevent it.

The most direct approach is filtration. A shower filter with activated carbon and vitamin C can neutralize chlorine before it reaches your skin. A KDF-55 layer captures heavy metals. Calcium sulfite tackles any residual chlorine that other layers miss.

None of these solutions are complicated. It's not life-changing technology. It's a filter that does what a filter is supposed to do.

The core

Your tap water is safe to drink. But "safe" and "optimal for your skin" are two different things. Chlorine and lime are not a danger — they are a factor. A factor you can ignore, or a factor you can address before you start the rest of your routine.
